A passion for helping women with Disordered Eating

Maureen’s life mission is to help women be all that they can be – by improving self esteem, and helping them find their voice and find freedom from shame, guilt and negativity.

Body positivity

As your therapist, I want to help you embark on a journey towards body positivity, self-love, and self-acceptance. Together, we’ll explore the concept of body acceptance, cultivating a deep appreciation for your body’s strengths and abilities, rather than dwelling on its perceived flaws. We’ll challenge the negative messages society and the media have instilled in you, empowering you to embrace your body’s unique beauty.

Through our sessions, you’ll discover the power of radical acceptance – embracing your body exactly as it is, without the need for change. We’ll delve into body liberation, freeing yourself from the shackles of unrealistic beauty standards and societal pressures. Fat acceptance will become a cornerstone of our journey, as we dismantle the stigma surrounding larger bodies.

Body-positive feminism will guide our exploration of how to reclaim your body and empower yourself. We’ll immerse ourselves in the body-positive movement, a vibrant community of individuals who celebrate body diversity and challenge societal norms.

Body-positive activism will become our rallying cry, as we advocate for inclusive representation and challenge discriminatory practices. We’ll explore the transformative power of body-positive social media, where you’ll find a supportive community that embraces all bodies.

Body-positive representation will be our mantra, ensuring that you see yourself reflected in the media, fashion, and beauty industries. We’ll draw inspiration from body-positive challenges, stories, and communities, finding strength and solidarity in shared experiences.

Together, we’ll cultivate a body-positive self-care routine, nourishing your body and mind with practices that promote well-being. Body-positive fashion will become your playground, as you embrace styles that make you feel confident and radiant.

Body-positive beauty will redefine your perception of attractiveness, as you discover the inherent beauty that lies within every body. Body-positive health will guide our approach to wellness, emphasizing self-care and holistic well-being.

We’ll create a body-positive culture within you, where self-acceptance and body appreciation reign supreme. Together, we’ll envision a body-positive future, where societal norms are redefined and all bodies are celebrated.

Intuitive eating

As your therapist, I guide my patients towards intuitive eating, a mindful, non-diet approach to eating that encourages listening to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, making peace with food, and building a healthy relationship with it.

Intuitive eating is a powerful tool for achieving weight normalization, sustainable weight management, eating disorders prevention, and overall well-being. It helps to improve self-esteem, reduce emotional eating, and promote body acceptance.

I would provide my patients with resources such as intuitive eating books, connect them with intuitive eating therapists, and encourage them to join intuitive eating communities.

I would also help them develop personalized intuitive eating plans and strategies for overcoming challenges. By embracing intuitive eating, my patients can cultivate a lifelong positive relationship with food and achieve their well-being goals.

Here are some of the benefits of intuitive eating:

  • Improved Self-Esteem: Intuitive eating can help to improve self-esteem by promoting body acceptance and reducing negative self-talk about food and body image.
  • Reduced Emotional Eating: Intuitive eating can help to reduce emotional eating by teaching people to identify and manage their emotions without using food as a coping mechanism.
  • Weight Normalization: Intuitive eating can help to achieve and maintain a healthy weight by promoting a balanced and sustainable approach to eating.
  • Eating Disorders Prevention: Intuitive eating can help to prevent eating disorders by teaching people to have a healthy relationship with food and their body.
  • Overall Well-Being: Intuitive eating can help to improve overall well-being by promoting physical and mental health, body satisfaction, and a sense of control over eating.

If you are struggling with your relationship with food, intuitive eating may be a helpful approach for you.

Diet Cycle

As your therapist, I would guide my patients towards breaking free from the relentless cycle of yo-yo dieting, weight regain, and disordered eating patterns that often lead to bingeing, emotional eating, and unhealthy food relationships. We would work together to uncover the underlying psychological issues that drive these behaviors, addressing the root causes of low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, perfectionism, and all-or-nothing thinking that often fuel these challenges.

Through a supportive and empowering therapeutic journey, we would challenge the negative self-talk and black-and-white thinking that perpetuate extreme dieting and unrealistic expectations. We would explore the emotional triggers that lead to overeating, compulsive eating, and restricted eating, developing healthier coping mechanisms for stress and difficult emotions.

I would encourage my patients to embrace a non-diet approach to eating, cultivating a more mindful and balanced relationship with food. We would work on improving body image and self-acceptance, promoting self-compassion and reducing the fear of failure that often leads to self-sabotage.

Together, we would navigate the challenges of chronic dieting and weight cycling, exploring the concept of weight normalization and emphasizing sustainable weight management strategies that prioritize overall well-being. By addressing the underlying psychological issues and promoting a holistic approach to healthy eating and body image, my patients can break free from the cycle of disordered eating and embrace a life of positive self-worth, emotional well-being, and a healthy relationship with food.

Anxiety

As your therapist, I would guide my patients towards understanding and managing their anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We would work together to identify their anxiety symptoms, triggers, and coping mechanisms, developing personalized strategies for managing their anxiety and improving their overall well-being.

I would explore various treatment options, including anxiety medication, anxiety therapy, self-care techniques, relaxation techniques, and mindfulness practices. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) would be a primary focus, as it has proven to be highly effective in treating anxiety disorders. Exposure therapy would also be considered, helping patients gradually confront their feared situations or objects. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) could also be beneficial, providing additional tools for managing anxiety and distress.

Support groups would be encouraged, offering a safe space for patients to connect with others who share similar experiences and gain valuable insights from peer support. I would also provide my patients with anxiety resources, including books, blogs, and apps, to promote ongoing learning and self-management.

Through therapy and self-care, my patients can develop a deeper understanding of their anxiety, learn effective coping mechanisms, and cultivate resilience in the face of anxiety challenges. Together, we can create a treatment plan that empowers them to live fulfilling and anxiety-free lives.

Depression

As your therapist, I would guide my patients towards recognizing, understanding, and managing depression, a common and treatable mental health condition that can significantly impact their mood, thoughts, and behavior. We would work collaboratively to identify the symptoms and potential causes of their depression, such as persistent sadness, loss of interest, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness.

Together, we would explore various treatment options, including depression medication, depression therapy, and evidence-based self-care techniques. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) would be a primary focus, as it has proven to be highly effective in treating depression. CBT helps patients identify and modify negative thought patterns that contribute to their depression, teaching them more balanced and realistic ways of thinking.

Support groups would be strongly encouraged, offering a safe and supportive space for patients to connect with others who share similar experiences and gain valuable insights from peer support. I would also provide my patients with comprehensive depression resources, including books, blogs, and apps, to promote ongoing learning, self-management, and a deeper understanding of their depression.

Through therapy and self-care, my patients can develop effective coping mechanisms, cultivate resilience in the face of depressive challenges, and regain a sense of control over their lives. Together, we can create a personalized treatment plan that empowers them to live fulfilling and depression-free lives.

Disordered Eating

As your therapist, I would guide my patients towards healing from disordered eating patterns and unhealthy eating behaviors, fostering a healthy relationship with food and promoting overall well-being. We would work together to address the underlying causes of these behaviors, addressing emotional triggers, food addiction, and weight cycling.

I would help my patients challenge negative body image and perfectionism, cultivating self-compassion and improving self-esteem. We would explore the link between disordered eating and anxiety and depression, developing strategies for managing emotional stress and adopting healthy coping mechanisms.

My approach would be tailored to the specific needs and experiences of each patient, considering their age, background, and identity. I would provide culturally sensitive care for minority communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those with disabilities, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and supported throughout their healing journey.

For athletes and individuals in high-pressure environments, I would offer guidance on maintaining a healthy balance between performance and well-being. I would also provide support for military personnel, veterans, and older adults, addressing the unique challenges they may face in managing disordered eating patterns.

Through a comprehensive and individualized approach, I would empower my patients to break free from the cycle of disordered eating and embrace a life of positive self-image, emotional well-being, and a healthy relationship with food.
